The Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) is a free service provided by the US Department of the Treasury. EFTPS allows you to pay all federal taxes

You can make payments through this website, a voice response system, or special channels established for tax specialists, payroll services, and banking institutions.

EFTPS is accessible by phone or online 24/7, and is quick, secure, and accurate. A company payment is often scheduled up to 120 days ahead, while a private payment can be scheduled up to twelve months ahead.

This is how it works:

STEP 1:

To begin, you need to be registered online. you'll require the following:

Gather the list of resources you wish to e-file form 2290 (Employer Identification Number (EIN), Vehicle Identification Number  (VIN), Taxable gross weight of the vehicle).

STEP 2:

Choose an authorized form 2290 e-file provider.

Get your password by USPS mail. After you receive your PIN, call 1.800.982.3526to get a temporary Internet password.

STEP 3:

Enter your EIN/SSN, PIN, and Internet password to gain access. Enter the payment information in the step-by-step windows.

Choose your payment method. Make your payment Online. 

Finally you may receive your stamped Schedule 1 via email after the IRS accepts your Form 2290. This comprises your EFT Acknowledgement Number, which could be a receipt for your payment instruction.

Call Customer Service at 1.800.555.8778 if you have any problems or need the PIN.

How does this apply to Form 2290 (HVUT)?

This is one method of paying taxes to the IRS. Other methods include using Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW) or mailing a check or bill of exchange.
